Description
Langenbeck Elevator
The Langenbeck elevator is a classic periosteal elevator in two lengths. It lifts periosteum and soft tissue before cutting, plating or grafting.
A respected name
Bernhard von Langenbeck shaped much of modern surgery, and many instruments bear that name. This elevator is one of the best known. Its simple design has lasted for generations.
Two lengths
The 18 cm version suits superficial bones and small exposures. Meanwhile, the 23 cm version reaches deeper surfaces. Both share the same reliable blade shape.
Who uses the Langenbeck elevator
Orthopedic, trauma and general surgeons use it widely. For example, it frees tissue before plating a forearm. It also suits rib and pelvic work.
Picking a length
Choose 18 cm for hand, foot and forearm cases. However, choose 23 cm for femur, pelvis and spine. Besides, many trays carry both lengths.
Leverage and length
The longer version gives more leverage, which helps with firm tissue. However, the short one feels more precise. Therefore surgeons often switch between them during a case.

Upkeep
Strip tissue from the blade before it hardens. A soak in enzymatic cleaner helps if residue remains. Later, inspect the edge for wear.
