Description
Kocher-Langenbeck Retractor
The Kocher-Langenbeck retractor combines a right-angle blade with a 22 cm body. Surgeons use it in general, orthopedic and hip surgery.
Nine blade sizes
Blades run from 25 x 6 mm at the small end up to 80 x 16 mm. So small blades suit a shallow cut, and long ones reach deep muscle. Also, the width grows as the blade gets longer.
Hip and orthopedic use
Hip surgeons use it to hold back the thick muscle layers around the joint. Then the long blades keep that tissue clear of the bone. Because of this, the team works with a steady view.
General surgery
General teams use the shorter blades for skin, fat and fascia. However, the same pattern suits deeper layers too. Therefore one set of sizes covers many different procedures.
Picking sizes
Keep several Kocher-Langenbeck retractor sizes in the hip or trauma tray. Meanwhile, the general tray usually needs only the smaller blades. That way each set stays lean and easy to count.
Cleaning Kocher-Langenbeck retractor
Rinse the blade and the angle soon after surgery, before blood dries in the bend. Next, use a soft brush along the handle and blade. Finally, dry it and store the nine sizes in order.
