Description
Knighton Retractor
The Knighton retractor keeps paraspinal muscle clear of the lamina in spinal operations. Surgeons know it as a hemilaminectomy retractor, useful in lumbar disc work.
Its job in the wound
During a hemilaminectomy, the surgeon exposes one side of the lamina. Therefore the muscle on that side must stay back for the whole procedure. A retractor like the Knighton keeps it there, so the surgeon can work with both hands.
Size
We sell the retractor in one 18 cm size. You can also find it among our retractors. For blade dimensions or a photo of the working end, please contact us before ordering.
In the procedure
First, the surgeon strips the muscle from the lamina. Next, the retractor goes in and holds the muscle aside. Then rongeurs and punches remove bone. In short, the Knighton keeps the exposure open from that point until closure.
Choosing a spinal retractor
Spinal retractors vary by depth, blade shape and how they hold. So surgeons often have firm preferences. If your team already uses a Knighton, this one should feel familiar. Otherwise, compare it with other lamina retractors in our range.
Caring for your Knighton retractor
Rinse off blood and tissue promptly after surgery. Also, brush any joints and the underside of the blades, where debris collects. After that, let every surface dry and run your standard cycle.

Ordering the Knighton
We give the Knighton a three-year warranty covering defects that come from workmanship. Our Atlanta staff also inspect every retractor by hand before we hand it to the carrier. For more on ordering, the FAQ pages will help. We describe our steels with reference to ASTM F899, a standard for surgical instrument materials. Another lamina option is the Hey lamina retractor. Look through our neurosurgery product range for more.
For professional use. Why do photos sometimes differ, and why does steel hold nickel? Our care instructions page explains both, and the returns section covers sending a retractor back.
