Description
Kerrison Punch Forceps
The Kerrison punch forceps removes bone in thin, controlled bites. Its footplate slips under the edge of the bone, and the cutting edge punches upward.
How a Kerrison punch works
The flat footplate sits beneath the bone, protecting the tissue below. Then the cutting edge slides forward and punches out a small piece. As a result, the surgeon removes bone with little risk to the dura.
Four bite sizes
This version has a 90 mm shaft. In addition, you can choose an upward bite of 3, 4, 5 or 6 mm. Smaller bites suit tight spaces near nerves.
Who uses Kerrison punch forceps
Spine surgeons use them for laminectomy and foraminotomy. Also, neurosurgeons use them in decompressions. Moreover, they suit some cranial base work as well.
Safe technique
Place the footplate carefully under the bone edge. Then check that no soft tissue sits in the bite. Withdraw and clear the fragment after each punch.
A short shaft
A 90 mm shaft suits cervical and shallow work, where long shafts feel clumsy. Consequently, this length gives fine control. Deeper levels may need a longer shaft.
