Description
Kern Bone Holding Forceps
Kern bone holding forceps grip bone firmly during reduction and fixation. Three lengths and an optional ratchet give six choices.
Six choices
Choose 15, 18 or 20 cm. Each length comes with or without a ratchet. So you can match the clamp to bone size and holding time.
The Kern grip
The jaws carry serrations that bite into cortex. Therefore the forceps resists slipping on round bone. That helps during drilling.
Who uses Kern bone holding forceps
Trauma surgeons hold forearm, ankle and clavicle fractures. Also, hand and foot surgeons use the shorter lengths. They suit osteotomy fixation too.
Ratchet or not
A ratchet frees the assistant’s hand once locked. However, a free forceps allows quick changes in pressure. Many surgeons keep both.
Size selection
The 15 cm length suits small bones, while 20 cm suits larger ones. Consequently, a set of two lengths covers most cases. The 18 cm sits neatly between.
Matching length to bone
Pick 15 cm for the hand, foot and wrist. Meanwhile, 18 cm suits the forearm and ankle. Finally, the 20 cm version handles the larger bones of the leg.
Kern bone holding forceps options
- 15 cm, with or without ratchet
- 18 cm, with or without ratchet
- 20 cm, with or without ratchet

Kern care
Serrations trap tissue, so scrub them well. Rinse, dry and oil the joint. Confirm the ratchet releases without sticking.
Why we protect each forceps
Each forceps passes a close check by our Atlanta team prior to packing. The Kern pattern has a warranty for three years against manufacturing defects. We will happily prepare a quote for your facility. The FDA lists ASTM F899 under stainless for instruments. To round out the tray, try the Lambotte forceps. Extra instruments are in the orthopedic department. A second forceps in stores keeps lists moving. The questions page goes over common order questions.
