Kelsey Fry Awls

The Kelsey Fry awl is a curved, pointed instrument for wiring in jaw surgery. Surgeons use it to carry a wire around the mandible during circumferential wiring.

What the awl does

The point passes through the soft tissue and hugs the lower border of the jaw. Then the surgeon threads the wire and draws it back through. As a result, the wire loops around the bone with little extra exposure.

Two lengths

We offer the awl at 15 cm and at 18 cm. Both versions keep the same curved shape. However, the longer one gives more reach around a larger jaw.

Where it fits in maxillofacial work

Teams often keep it with wire cutters, wire twisters and elevators. For example, a fracture tray might hold one awl of each length. That way the surgeon can match the tool to the patient.

Picking your length

First, look at the range of patients you treat. Smaller jaws usually suit the 15 cm awl. Next, consider the 18 cm version for adults with a deeper jaw line, or order both.

Caring for your Kelsey Fry awl

Clean the point and curve right after the case, before debris dries. Then hold the awl tip to a bright lamp and look for any bend. Finally, dry the awl and sterilize it with a tip guard or in a protective slot.
