The House footplate chisel is a tiny chisel for stapes surgery. With it, an otologist can divide or lift a section of the footplate before a prosthesis goes in.

From the House ear tradition

Howard House and his colleagues shaped many modern stapes instruments. This chisel follows their approach, so the working end stays very small and the shaft stays slim. The surgeon can therefore see the footplate while the chisel touches it.

Two sizes

We list two sizes: 1+1.2 mm and 1.5+1.8 mm. Each size carries two figures, which describe the working end. If you need to confirm how those figures relate to your current chisels, please contact us.

Where it fits

Stapes surgery follows a careful sequence. First, the surgeon separates the stapes arch. Then they address the footplate with a chisel, pick or drill. Finally, a prosthesis restores the sound path.

Picking a size

The smaller chisel suits fine, limited work. The larger one, however, covers a wider section of footplate in one step. Many surgeons keep both, since footplates vary between patients.

Caring for your House footplate chisel

Wipe bone dust from the edge right after use. Next, clean the chisel with a soft brush in a mild enzymatic solution. Then dry it and store it with an edge guard for sterilization.
