Description
Hibbs Osteotome
The Hibbs osteotome is a long, strong blade from the early days of spinal fusion. Russell Hibbs used patterns like it to raise and cut bone along the spine.
Length for deep work
The long shaft keeps the hand and mallet clear of a deep wound. So the surgeon can see the edge while it works. In addition, the solid body takes repeated blows without flexing.
Ten combinations
Widths run 6, 13, 19, 25 and 32 mm. Each one comes straight or curved, which gives ten choices. A curved edge lifts bone flaps, while a straight one makes clean cuts.
Using the Hibbs osteotome in spine and beyond
Spine teams use it to prepare a fusion bed. However, it also earns a place in hip and pelvic work where reach matters. For example, it helps when cutting graft from the iliac crest. Pair it with the matching Hibbs gouge when the graft needs scooping rather than slicing.
Straight or curved, and when
Choose the straight edge when the cut runs in a clean line, such as across a lamina. On the other hand, a curved edge rolls bone up and away from a deeper layer. Many spine trays therefore carry one of each in the middle widths.
Hibbs osteotome options
- Five Hibbs widths: 6, 13, 19, 25, 32 mm
- Pick a straight or a curved cutting edge
- Long shaft that keeps the mallet clear of the wound
- Ships non-sterile
Cleaning a long blade
Brush along the full length of the shaft, not just the tip. Then rinse and dry it before sterilization. Also store it flat so the edge never rests against other steel.
The pledge behind each osteotome
The osteotome has cover for three years against manufacturing defects in all cases. Each osteotome passes a hand inspection by Atlanta staff before shipment. Stainless for surgery falls under a standard, namely ASTM F899. Busy hospitals keep one per tray for back-to-back cases. Scan the entire orthopedic range for other patterns.
