Description
Hibbs Bone Gouge
The Hibbs bone gouge is a long hollow blade for scooping bone deep in the wound. It comes from the spinal fusion tradition that Russell Hibbs started.
Length and strength
The long shank keeps the hand clear of the field. Meanwhile, the thick hollow blade holds its curve under heavy blows. Therefore it handles dense cortex as well as soft cancellous bone.
Straight or curved
Every width, from 6 to 32 mm, comes straight or curved. Also, that gives ten choices in all. Curved blades help when lifting graft from the inner table of the pelvis.
Where the Hibbs bone gouge works
Spine surgeons use it to decorticate and to gather graft. Also, hip and pelvic surgeons use it to harvest bone from the iliac crest. It pairs well with the Hibbs chisel and osteotome.
Straight or curved for graft work
A straight Hibbs gouge drives forward into cancellous bone. Meanwhile, a curved one follows the inner wall of the pelvis. Therefore teams that harvest graft often keep one of each.
Hibbs bone gouge options
- Widths: 6, 13, 19, 25 and 32 mm
- Straight or curved blade
- Long shank for deep work

Cleaning after graft harvest
Graft material packs tightly into the hollow, so flush it soon. After that, brush, rinse and dry. Keep the edge guarded in storage.
