Description
Hibbs Bone Chisel
The Hibbs bone chisel is a long single-bevel blade from spinal fusion surgery. It shaves and levels bone deep in a wound, which suits spine and pelvic work.
Built for reach
A long shank keeps the mallet and hand well above the wound. So the surgeon can watch the edge as it cuts. The stout build also resists bending under firm blows.
Five widths
Choose 6, 13, 19, 25 or 32 mm. The narrow 6 mm blade fits between bony ridges. In contrast, the 32 mm blade levels broad areas quickly.
Hibbs bone chisel in the spine
Surgeons use it to decorticate laminae and prepare beds for graft. It also trims bone edges after an osteotomy. Because the edge has one flat face, it leaves a level surface for the graft to sit on. The matching Hibbs gouge and osteotome complete the set.
Leveling technique
Lay the unbevelled face against the surface that stays. Then tap lightly and let the bevel lift a thin layer. Because the shank is long, small hand moves make fine changes at the edge.
Hibbs bone chisel widths

Long instrument care
Brush the full length, not only the edge. Then rinse, dry and check the bevel. Store it flat so the edge stays protected.
