Description
Guillaume Nerve Retractor
The Guillaume nerve retractor holds a nerve root aside during spinal surgery. With the root protected, the surgeon can work on the disc or bone beneath it.
Protecting the root
During a discectomy, the nerve root often lies directly over the disc. Therefore, an assistant or the surgeon moves it aside with a retractor. The Guillaume pattern gives a steady hold while other tools work.
Size information
We do not yet list dimensions for this retractor. So please ask for the length or blade width before you place an order. We will measure a piece from stock and reply with the details.
In a discectomy
First, the surgeon removes enough bone to see the root. Next, the retractor moves the root toward the midline. Then the surgeon opens the annulus and removes the disc material.
Pairing it with other tools
Nerve root retractors work with nerve hooks, rongeurs and dissectors. For example, a hook checks the root, and then the retractor holds it. In addition, many teams keep two retractor patterns for different anatomy.
Caring for your Guillaume retractor
Rinse the Guillaume retractor promptly after surgery. Then brush the blade and shaft with a mild detergent. Dry it thoroughly and sterilize it according to your protocol.
