Description
Graefe Cataract Knife
The Graefe cataract knife is the classic long, narrow blade of traditional cataract surgery. This 13 cm reusable steel version keeps the familiar outline. It remains a key teaching tool for the history of cataract surgery.
The Classic Cataract Section
For many decades, surgeons opened the eye for cataract removal with a knife like this. The long, narrow blade crossed the chamber and cut outward. Modern methods have largely replaced that approach. Still, the knife remains a vital part of surgical history.

Who Orders It Today
Teaching programs order it to show classic technique. Some surgeons keep one for special cases. In addition, collectors value the pattern. Then again, each buyer gets the same 13 cm knife.
Rigid Cases for a Long Blade
A long blade needs a case that holds it flat. So choose one with a soft insert and a firm lid. Then the knife cannot shift or bend in transit. Also keep a guard on the edge inside the case.
Spotting Edge Wear Early
Edge wear starts small. At first, the blade may just feel a little slower to enter. So check it under magnification whenever that happens. If you see a rolled or chipped spot, retire it.
Why the Blade Is So Narrow
A slim blade could pass across the chamber and then cut outward in one smooth stroke. So the shape served a clear purpose in the classic section. That is one reason it lasted so long in surgical trays.
