Description
Gills-Welsh Double Barreled Irrigation/Aspiration Cannula
The Gills-Welsh double barreled cannula uses two tubes joined side by side. First, one tube carries fluid in. Then the other draws cortex out through a small port. As a result, you get steady inflow and separate, precise aspiration in one tool.
Two barrels, two jobs
In a single shaft I/A tool, both channels share one tube. Here, however, each channel has its own barrel. As a result, flow paths stay clear, and you can sense resistance as you aspirate. Gills and Welsh developed tools for manual cataract work, and this design reflects that aim.
Pattern summary
Since only one pattern is offered, there are no size choices to weigh. Instead, every unit includes:
- Separate inflow barrel
- Separate aspiration barrel with a small port
- Fittings for a line and a syringe
- Steel construction for repeat use
Using the double barrel
Enter with the aspiration port facing up. Next, start the inflow and wait for the chamber to deepen. Then engage cortex, draw it centrally, and aspirate. If the capsule moves toward the port, stop and let it release. In practice, small and slow moves work best.
Choosing among Gills designs
The Gills-Welsh double barreled cannula suits those who want two clear channels. Meanwhile, the single Gills I/A tool offers a slimmer 25/23 gauge profile. Choose the double barrel for steady flow, and the single tube for small wounds.
Cleaning two barrels
Flush each barrel on its own. Then soak in an enzyme cleaner, rinse well and dry with air. Finally, check both ports are open before packing. It ships non-sterile, yet both barrels can be cleaned and steamed for many more cases.
Gills-Welsh warranty and next steps
We back each barrel for three years against manufacturing defects, so a blocked port from a production fault is ours to fix. The steel conforms to ASTM F899. Browse ophthalmic I/A instruments for alternatives. A simpler option is the Simcoe I/A cannula. Our FAQs answer most order questions.
