Description
Gauss Placenta and Ovum Forceps
Gauss placenta forceps grasp and remove retained tissue from the uterus. This Gauss pattern instrument measures about 25 cm.
What these forceps do
The instrument reaches through the cervix to grasp retained placenta or products of conception. So the clinician can clear fragments left after miscarriage or delivery without a large instrument. Then a curette may complete the clearance.
About 25 cm
The length suits most postpartum and gynecologic cases. Meanwhile, it keeps the hand outside the vaginal opening. As a result, the operator retains a clear view of the cervix.
On the tray
Teams place it with a speculum, tenaculum and dilators. In addition, a sponge holder and a curette often sit nearby. Therefore, one tray covers the full procedure from start to finish.
Pattern choice
Pattern names such as Gauss, Saenger and Lewkowitz reflect the different designers behind each version. However, all serve the same broad task of clearing retained tissue. So a surgeon’s training usually guides the choice of Gauss placenta forceps.
Reprocessing Gauss placenta forceps
Open the instrument before rinsing so water reaches every surface. Next, brush the jaws inside and out, then rinse with purified water. Finally, dry it completely and inspect for corrosion before sterilizing.
