Footplate Pick

A footplate pick is a fine hook-like instrument for stapes surgery. Otologists use it to work on the stapes footplate and to lift or remove small fragments.

The footplate challenge

The stapes footplate sits in the oval window and measures only a few millimeters across. So any instrument that touches it must be small and precise. A pick gives the surgeon that fine point of contact.

Four sizes

We offer 0.7 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm and 3 mm sizes. The 0.7 mm pick suits the finest work. The 3 mm pick, however, reaches wider areas. The two middle sizes cover general steps in between.

In stapes surgery

During stapedectomy or stapedotomy, the surgeon handles the footplate with great care. Then fragments may need removal before a prosthesis goes in. Picks in several sizes help at each of these moments.

Choosing sizes

Most surgeons keep at least two picks on the stapes tray. First, pick a fine size for delicate contact. Next, add a larger one for broader movements. Contact us if you want to discuss a set.

Caring for your footplate pick

Clean the tip gently with a soft brush, and never let it knock against other instruments. Then rinse and dry it fully. Finally, place it in a rack with a silicone tip cover before sterilization, so the point stays true.
