The Finochietto needle holder is a long thoracic instrument with angled jaws. At 27 or 28 cm, it reaches into the chest through a narrow opening.

Angled jaws

The angle presents the needle toward tissue that faces away from you. As a result, deep stitches need less wrist twisting. That helps when a straight holder would force an awkward approach.

Thoracic reach

Long shanks pass between rib spreader blades. Meanwhile, the handles stay well outside the incision. So the Finochietto needle holder keeps the surgeon’s hand out of the view.

Jaw material

Pick stainless jaws for a basic holder. Instead, carbide inserts in the normal profile keep their bite on general sutures much longer. Gold handles identify the carbide version quickly.

Thoracic sets often include a Finochietto needle holder next to straight long holders. Then the surgeon can choose the best approach angle for each stitch. Reprocessing Finochietto needle holder

Clean the angled jaws from both sides, because debris collects in the bend. Next, flush the box joint well. Finally, dry the holder and confirm the angled tips close without a gap.
