Fahlbusch Curette Malleable
The Fahlbusch curette is a malleable curette for transsphenoidal surgery. Surgeons use it to remove pituitary tumor tissue through the nose, and they can bend the shaft to reach around the sella.
Why a malleable shaft
Pituitary tumors often extend beyond the direct line of sight. So a curette that the surgeon can shape before use helps to reach these areas. The surgeon bends the shaft to suit the case, then works through the speculum.
Size and tip
This curette comes at 25 cm with a 2.5 mm tip. The long shaft passes through the nasal speculum. Meanwhile, the small tip suits fine removal of tissue in tight corners.
In transsphenoidal surgery
First, the speculum opens the route to the sphenoid. Next, the surgeon opens the sella floor. Then curettes and scoops remove the tumor tissue, and the curette handles the smaller, harder-to-reach areas.
Building a pituitary set
Most transsphenoidal sets hold curettes in several sizes. In addition, malleable scoops and enucleators complete the range. For instance, a 2.5 mm curette works well next to a larger ring curette.
Caring for your Fahlbusch curette
Straighten the shaft gently after the case if your protocol allows it. Then clean the tip with a small brush and rinse the full length. Dry it completely before you sterilize and store it.
