Description
Doyen Mallet
The Doyen mallet is a classic surgical hammer with a round steel head. Surgeons use it to drive osteotomes, chisels and gouges with steady, even blows.
A familiar pattern
Eugene-Louis Doyen gave the name to many general surgical tools. Additionally, this mallet keeps that simple, balanced layout. As a result, it feels familiar to most theater teams.
Three head diameters
Pick a 25, 30 or 35 mm head. The 25 mm version is the lightest, so it suits small blades. On the other hand, the 35 mm head carries more mass for broad osteotomes.
Choosing a Doyen mallet
Think about the blades you use most. If they are fine, start with the 25 mm head. However, if you work on long bones or the pelvis, the 30 or 35 mm size makes more sense.
Striking technique
Hold the handle near its end for a longer swing. Then let the weight of the head do the work rather than forcing each blow. Short, regular taps keep the blade on its line.
Why weight differs by size
A wider head usually means more steel and therefore more mass. Consequently, the 35 mm Doyen moves a blade further with each tap than the 25 mm one. Even so, all three keep the same handle feel.
