Description
Desjardins Gall Stone Scoop
The Desjardins gall stone scoop lifts stones and debris out of the common bile duct. Its small bowl sits at the end of a long shaft, so it reaches down the duct through an open choledochotomy.
Bowl sizes
The scoop comes as figure 1, 2, 3 or 4, and the bowl grows with each number. Smaller bowls pass into narrow ducts. Meanwhile, larger bowls lift bigger stones in one pass.
How the Desjardins gall stone scoop works
The surgeon passes the scoop beyond a stone and then draws it back. As a result, the bowl collects the stone and brings it to the opening. Flushing the duct afterwards clears any fragments.
Typical procedures
Hepatobiliary teams reach for it once the duct is open. In particular, it clears stones that forceps cannot grasp. It also removes sludge and small fragments.
Working gently
The duct wall is thin and easy to tear. Therefore, move the scoop slowly and never force it past resistance. If a stone sticks, try a smaller figure or switch to forceps.
Pairing on the tray
Desjardins forceps, probes and duct dilators often sit beside the scoop. Together they let the surgeon find, free and remove stones. A full set saves time when a duct holds several stones.
