The Davis dura dissector frees the dura from the overlying bone. Neurosurgeons rely on it in cranial and spinal procedures, so the membrane stays safe when bone work begins.

Separating dura from bone

Dura tends to stick to the underside of the skull, and to the lamina in the spine. Therefore, the surgeon slides a dissector between the two layers first. That step protects the dura and the brain or cord beneath it.

A 25 cm length

When surgeons pick it up

For example, after a burr hole the dissector strips dura from the bone around it. Then a saw or rongeur can cut without catching the membrane. Surgeons also use it along the edge of a laminectomy.

Dura dissectors differ in length and tip shape. A longer tool such as this one suits deeper work, while shorter patterns give finer feel near the surface. Many surgeons therefore keep two or three on the tray.

Rinse off blood and bone dust at the end of each case. Next, scrub the tip and handle with a mild detergent. Then dry the instrument fully and sterilize it following your validated cycle.
