Cottle Rasp

The Cottle rasp is a nasal rasp for reducing and smoothing bone in rhinoplasty. Surgeons draw it along the nasal dorsum to lower a bony hump or to refine the profile.

How a nasal rasp works

A rasp removes bone gradually, in small amounts with each stroke. So the surgeon can shape the dorsum step by step and check the result often. This control makes a rasp a common choice for fine contouring.

Two blade sizes

We offer the 21 cm Cottle rasp with either a 40 x 7 mm or a 30 x 8 mm blade. The longer 40 mm blade covers more bone per stroke. Meanwhile, the shorter, slightly wider 30 x 8 mm blade suits a more focused area.

Its role in hump reduction

First, the surgeon exposes the bony dorsum with elevators. Next, an osteotome or rasp lowers the hump. Then smaller rasps often follow to blend the edges, so the profile feels smooth under the skin.

Choosing a blade

If you do many larger hump reductions, start with the 40 x 7 mm blade. However, if you mainly refine small areas, the 30 x 8 mm option may suit you better. Some surgeons simply order both.

Caring for your Cottle rasp

Bone dust packs into rasp teeth quickly, so clean the blade soon after use. Use a stiff nylon or bristle brush along the teeth. Next, rinse well, dry fully, and then sterilize.
