Cottle Mallet

The Cottle mallet is a surgical hammer for nasal bone surgery. Surgeons use the Cottle mallet to drive osteotomes and chisels during rhinoplasty and septal work.

Firm, short strokes

Some bone cuts need more force than others. So a heavier mallet helps the osteotome pass through thicker bone. The surgeon or assistant then taps in short, deliberate strokes.

18 cm and 240 g

This mallet is 18 cm long and weighs 240 g. The shorter handle keeps the weight close to the hand. As a result, many users find it easy to control.

Its place in rhinoplasty

Lateral and medial osteotomies often rely on a mallet. For example, the assistant taps while the surgeon guides the osteotome. The Cottle pattern appears in many nasal sets for this reason.

Matching mallet to task

If you often cut thick bone, then the 240 g weight may suit you. However, the 140 g Hajek mallet gives lighter taps. Consider keeping one of each, so the surgeon can choose the right weight for each cut.

Caring for the mallet

Clean the mallet head and handle straight after surgery. Then scrub it with a brush under running water. Dry it completely and then sterilize it.
