Collin Clip Forceps for Wound Clips
The Collin clip forceps handle metal wound clips during skin closure and later removal. A light frame and slim jaws make it quick to work along a long incision.
A light, quick pattern
At 13 cm, the Collin is short and easy to hold between finger and thumb. Because of that, an assistant can work clip after clip without tiring. It also fits neatly in a dressing pack.
How clips close a wound
Metal wound clips press the two skin edges together like small staples. In practice, the surgeon everts the edges with tissue forceps, and the clip forceps then squeeze each clip shut across the line.
Where the Collin clip forceps are used
General, thyroid and breast surgeons use clips when they want a fast closure with a neat scar. Later, ward nurses use the same pattern to lift the clips out once the wound has healed.
Spacing the clips
Aim for an even gap of roughly one centimetre between clips. If the gap is too wide, the edges can gape; if it is too narrow, the skin may pucker.
Choosing among clip forceps
The Michel, Wachenfeldt and Hegenbarth patterns do a similar job with different jaw shapes. Consequently, many departments simply keep the one their nurses prefer, plus a spare.

Keeping the jaws aligned
Rinse away blood before it dries in the jaw grooves. Next, dry the forceps and check that both jaws still meet squarely. Afterwards, sterilise.
