Cloward Retractor

The Cloward retractor is a self-retaining retractor for anterior cervical spine surgery. It holds soft tissue of the neck aside so the surgeon can reach the front of the vertebrae.

Exposure for anterior cervical work

Anterior cervical surgery passes between delicate neck structures. Therefore, the retractor needs to hold those structures gently and steadily. Blades attach to the frame and keep the trachea, esophagus and muscles out of the field.

Sizes and configurations

We offer the retractor in 15 cm and 25 cm sizes. You can buy either size as the retractor only or complete with 2 blades. That makes four options. The frame-only choice suits hospitals that already have blades.

How it fits a discectomy set

First, the surgeon dissects down to the anterior spine. Next, the retractor goes in and opens. Then a distractor may widen the disc space while the retractor keeps the soft tissue back. It also sits in our retractors range.

Frame only or complete

If you are starting a new set, the complete version saves ordering blades separately. However, if you already hold blades, the frame only may be enough. Also consider buying extra blade depths for a wider patient range.

Caring for your Cloward retractor

Take the blades off before cleaning. Then rinse and brush the frame, the ratchet and the blade mounts. Dry every part completely and reassemble only after sterilization, if your protocol permits.
