Description
Chisel
This small orthopedic chisel has one flat face and one bevel. It trims and levels bone in small spaces, so it suits hand and foot work.
How a small orthopedic chisel behaves
The flat back sits against the bone you want to keep. Meanwhile, the bevel lifts away the layer above. That action gives a flat, even surface rather than a split.
Five widths
Pick 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 mm. The narrow blades trim a ridge or notch. The 16 mm blade, by contrast, levels a wider surface in fewer strokes.
Choosing a small orthopedic chisel
For shaving, a chisel beats an osteotome, because the flat face prevents splitting. However, it does not cut deeply in a straight line. So many trays carry both, side by side.
Chisel or osteotome?
A chisel shaves and levels, while an osteotome splits along a line. So the chisel is the better pick for trimming a step or flattening a graft bed. Also, its flat back helps you judge depth by feel.
Small orthopedic chisel widths
- 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm blades
- Single bevel, flat back
- Short overall length for close control
- Supplied non-sterile
Keeping it ready
Wipe the bevel clean during the case if bone builds up. Afterward, wash and dry the blade. A sharp edge cuts with less force, so hone it whenever it starts to drag.
How we stand behind each chisel
Practices receive three years against manufacturing defects covering every chisel from the ship date. An Atlanta colleague goes over every chisel by hand before the courier comes. Compare it with the small orthopedic gouge. Medical stainless steel meets a public standard, namely ASTM F899. Matching items sit in the orthopedic collection. We will happily check stock by email. A spare chisel on the shelf avoids delays. For quick help, scan our buyer FAQ.
