Description
Castroviejo Eye Speculum
The Castroviejo eye speculum is an adjustable 8 cm lid holder with a screw to set the opening. Once you set the width, it holds it. That makes it a common choice for corneal and cataract surgery, where steady exposure is key.
Setting the Castroviejo opening
Place the speculum closed, then turn the screw to spread the lids. Then stop when the view is clear. Because the screw locks the width, the lids will not creep shut during the case.
Blades and lashes
Castroviejo specula often use blades that tuck the lashes away from the field. As a result, lashes stay off the cornea and out of the wound. Check the photo to see the blade form on this model.
Where the 8 cm Castroviejo shines
It suits:
- Corneal transplant and other corneal work
- Cataract cases that need a fixed opening
- Longer procedures where creep would slow you
Fine-tuning during the case
Sometimes you need a little more or less spread as the case goes on. With a screw, you can adjust in small steps. However, open only as far as needed, since extra spread presses on the globe.
Caring for the Castroviejo screw
The screw thread is the part most likely to stiffen. So clean it with a brush after each use, and rinse well. Next, let it dry fully. A drop of instrument milk, if your protocol uses it, also keeps the thread smooth.
Ordering the Castroviejo speculum
Castroviejo specula ship unsterile; wash the screw and blades, sterilize them, and the Castroviejo is ready for repeat corneal lists. Castroviejo steel meets ASTM F899. A warranty of three years against manufacturing defects covers the Castroviejo, screw included. Castroviejo users can visit our ophthalmic speculum collection, or compare the Park Guyton speculum.
