The Brunetti chisel is a long bone chisel for opening the spinal canal from behind. Surgeons drive it with controlled mallet taps to cut through the posterior bony arch.

A chisel needs a suitable mallet and a range of rongeurs nearby. For instance, many teams pair it with a Kerrison-type punch for the final margins. Also consider a self-retaining retractor so the muscles stay out of the way.

Wash bone debris from the blade right after use. Then scrub along the edge with a nylon brush, working away from the tip. Finally, dry the chisel and store it with an edge protector so the cutting edge stays true.
