Description
Bozemann Ligature Catcher
The Bozemann ligature catcher retrieves suture ends from deep, narrow spaces. Its hooked tip catches the thread so the surgeon can draw it up and tie it.
Why a ligature catcher
Deep in the pelvis, fingers cannot always reach a suture end. Furthermore, a slim catcher can. As a result, ties stay secure even where space is tight.
Size of the Bozemann ligature catcher
At 21 cm, it reaches deep into the pelvis and vagina. Meanwhile, the slim tip passes beside other instruments.
Typical procedures
Gynaecological and pelvic surgeons use it most. For instance, it helps during vaginal repairs and deep ligations. It also suits rectal surgery.
Technique
Pass the tip beside the suture end and turn it slightly to hook the thread. Then draw it up gently into view.
Pairing
A knot tier pushes knots down after the catcher brings the thread up. Together they make deep tying much easier.
Why the hook shape matters
A plain probe would slide past a loose thread. Instead, the small hook turns into the suture and holds it, so even a slippery monofilament end comes up on the first try.
