Description
Binkhorst Eye Cannula
The Binkhorst eye cannula is an irrigating cannula offered in three forms: left, right and straight. Binkhorst’s name is linked with early lens implant surgery. This cannula keeps fluid flowing while you work in the anterior chamber.
Left, right or straight
The left and right forms turn the tip toward one side. As a result, you can reach areas to the left or right of the wound without twisting your wrist. In contrast, the straight form points directly ahead, which suits work opposite the incision. Many surgeons stock one of each. Options:
- Left form for reach to one side
- Right form for the opposite side
- Straight form for work across the chamber
- Syringe or line hub on every version
Matching the form to the eye
Think about where you sit and where the wound lies. For a temporal approach on a right eye, one side form may reach the subincisional area better. However, habits vary. So try the straight form first, then add a side form where you struggle to reach.
Using a Binkhorst cannula
Prime the line before entry. Then slide the tip through the wound with the bend turned to the side. Rotate it once inside. Also, keep the flow gentle near the iris, since a strong jet can make it billow.
Keeping the three forms sorted
Side forms can look alike at a glance. Therefore, store each form in its own labeled slot. This avoids handing the wrong side mid case.
Binkhorst reprocessing
Flush the bore with water as soon as the case ends. Next, soak, rinse and air dry it. Check the bend has not shifted before you pack it. Each form comes non-sterile; clean and autoclave it before the first list and between all later ones.
