Description
Bernhard Towel Forceps
The Bernhard towel forceps secure drapes and towels around the operating field. Their sharp, curved points pierce cloth and paper drapes and hold the layers together firmly.
Sharp, curved points
The points pass through thick drapes with little effort. As a result, the layers stay fixed even when the team leans on them during a long case.
Size of the Bernhard towel forceps
At 16.5 cm, these forceps are larger than many towel clips. Therefore, they suit heavy drapes, large fields and bulky layers at the corners.
Fixing cables and tubing
Besides drapes, teams use them to anchor suction tubing, diathermy leads and light cables to the drapes. That keeps cables from sliding off the table.
Placing the forceps
Pinch the drape layers together with one hand. Then close the forceps so both points pass through, and listen for the ratchet to lock.
A note on skin
Sharp points can mark skin if placed carelessly. For that reason, check that only drape sits between the points unless skin fixation is intended.
How many to stock
A large abdominal drape usually needs four forceps at the corners and one or two for cables. Many trays therefore carry six.

Why we check the forceps
The Bernhard pattern carries three years against manufacturing defects. Points stay aligned. An Atlanta colleague looks over the Bernhard pattern one at a time before dispatch. More patterns feature in our general surgery line. To read about instrument metals, visit ASTM F899. Also consider the Lane towel forceps. For order basics, read our buyer FAQ.
