Description

Beckmann-Adson Retractor

The Beckmann-Adson retractor is a self-retaining retractor for deep exposures, especially in spinal surgery. It holds muscle apart so the surgeon can work without constant manual retraction.

Design and purpose

This pattern combines a long frame with toothed blades. Therefore, it reaches deep into the wound and keeps it open steadily. Our general retractor pages list it as well.

Blade sizes and tooth types

Every Beckmann-Adson retractor measures 31 cm with 4 x 4 teeth. We offer four blade sizes: 25 x 25, 25 x 31, 25 x 40 and 25 x 45 mm. In addition, each blade size comes blunt or sharp, which gives eight options.

Where it fits

For example, a lumbar or thoracic exposure may need longer blades. A shallower cervical approach, by contrast, may suit shorter ones. Many hospitals keep several blade sizes to cover different patients.

Selecting your version

First, match the blade depth to your usual wound. Next, choose sharp teeth for firm muscle grip or blunt teeth for gentler contact. Unsure? Tell us the blades you own now and we can recommend one to add.

Caring for your Beckmann-Adson retractor

Rinse the blades, teeth and ratchet as soon as the case ends. Then brush the joint area gently but thoroughly. Finally, dry every surface and sterilize the retractor while it sits open.
