Description

Barraquer Suture Forceps

The Barraquer suture forceps is a delicate tool for picking up fine suture and thin tissue. It comes in two lengths, 7cm and 10cm. Both share the same slim tips, so pick by reach and by how you like to hold it.

Picking 7cm or 10cm

The 7cm size sits short in the fingers. It suits work close to the eye, such as corneal or limbal sutures, when you rest your hand on the brow. By contrast, the 10cm size gives more reach. It also feels better if you hold the forceps like a pencil with a longer grip.

What the slim tips do well

Fine tips let you grasp a suture end without fraying it. They also help you lift a thin flap or wound lip with little crush. However, they are not made for heavy tissue or for clamping, so keep them for delicate steps.

Typical roles in a case

  • Holding a suture end while you form a knot
  • Steadying a wound edge as the needle passes
  • Handing suture to the needle holder
  • Pulling a cut suture out after the wound heals

A word on technique

Light pressure works best. First, close the tips just enough to hold the thread. Then guide it where you need it. If you squeeze hard, the fine tips can splay and lose their alignment.

Keeping Barraquer tips aligned

Rinse the tips soon after use, because dried matter is hard to shift from small gaps. After that, inspect them under magnification. Finally, store them with a tip cover so they do not meet other steel.

Both lengths ship non-sterile, and after cleaning and sterilization each Barraquer pair returns to service. Barraquer tips here use stainless matched to ASTM F899. Our Barraquer cover runs three years against manufacturing defects; real daily use is the best test. You can also browse the full ophthalmic catalogue, look at the Tubingen pattern with curved or straight tips, or visit our help page.

Barraquer suture forceps go to trained clinical staff only. Our sterilization advice and Barraquer shipping options pages cover the rest.
