Description
Bangerter Retrobulbar Cannula
The Bangerter retrobulbar cannula is a long cannula for placing local anesthetic behind the globe. Because it is a cannula and not a cutting needle, the end does not slice as it advances. That is the main reason some surgeons choose this style for orbital blocks.
Reaching the muscle cone
A retrobulbar block places anesthetic in the cone of muscles behind the eye. The shaft gives enough reach for the tip to get there while the hub stays outside the orbit. Since the end is not a cutting point, many users make a small entry first. However, the route and depth always remain the surgeon’s call.
Steady hands during the block
Fit a syringe to the hub and hold it close to the hub for the best feel. Then advance slowly and aspirate before you inject, as standard practice suggests. A small syringe also gives finer control of the dose. Meanwhile, watch the globe for any movement as the tip moves deeper.
What this Bangerter pattern offers
There is one version on this page, with no size choices. Instead, your choice is between this and the other block cannulas we list. Key points:
- Long shaft that reaches behind the globe
- Rounded, non-cutting end
- Hub that takes a standard syringe
- Reusable stainless build
Rinse before drug residue dries
Rinse the lumen with water as soon as the case ends, since dried drug and blood clog fine tubes. Next, run a cleaning wire or flush through it. Then dry it and pack it for steam. Out of the box this block cannula is non-sterile, so plan a full wash and autoclave run before each use.
