Description
Austin Retractor
The Austin retractor is one of the simplest tools on an oral surgery tray, and one of the most used. Its short, right-angled blade hooks around a cheek, the tongue or a small flap and holds it aside. Because it is light and compact, the assistant can keep it in place for a long time without fatigue.
Why the Right-Angle Blade Works
The blade turns at a right angle to the handle. Therefore, the assistant pulls straight back while the blade presses sideways against the tissue. That geometry keeps the hand away from the operator’s line of sight, so the field stays open in both arches.
One Version, Many Procedures
This retractor comes in a single size, and our supplier catalogue lists it among the instruments it suggests for each procedure. In fact, most offices buy several, since one often stays on the extraction tray and another on the implant tray.
- Cheek retraction during surgical extractions
- Holding a flap during implant placement
- Tongue control in lower posterior work
Using It Without Pinching
First, slip the blade into the vestibule with the curve facing the tissue. Then, apply gentle traction, enough to open the view but not enough to blanch the lip. When the case runs long, also pause briefly to let the tissue recover, which keeps the patient more comfortable.
Inspected Here, Warranted for Three Years
Every Austin retractor passes a hands-on inspection in the United States before shipping. A blade that bends because of faulty forging is replaced, since the Austin carries three years against manufacturing defects. It reaches you non-sterile; scrub it, rinse it and autoclave it before it enters the operatory.
Its stainless steel follows ASTM F899. Explore more surgical retractors, reflect the tissue first with our Periosteal Elevator #9A, or browse the FAQs.
