Winter Placenta and Ovum Forceps

Winter placenta forceps remove retained placental tissue and products of conception. They come in three jaw sizes, Fig 1 to Fig 3.

Three jaw sizes

Fig 1, Fig 2 and Fig 3 give three jaw sizes on the same pattern. So the surgeon can match the jaw to the cervical opening and the tissue. Also, a set of all three covers a wide range of cases.

Straight or curved

The straight version measures 28 cm and has no ratchet. Meanwhile, the curved version comes in 28 cm with or without ratchet, or 27 cm without. Then the gentle curve helps the jaws reach the fundus along the uterine axis.

Ratchet or free

A ratchet holds the jaws closed on a fragment. However, many surgeons prefer free forceps for a lighter feel. In that case, pick a version without the ratchet.

Care of Winter placenta forceps

Release the ratchet, if present, before cleaning. Next, scrub both jaw faces and the hinge area, and rinse the whole instrument well. Finally, dry the instrument and sterilize it with the jaws slightly open.
