Description
Westermark Polypus And Dressing Forceps
The Westermark dressing forceps are slim forceps for packing gauze and swabbing in gynaecology. Their narrow jaws pass through the cervix, so the clinician can pack or swab the uterine cavity with little stretching.
Slim jaws
Narrow jaws need very little dilation to enter the cervical canal. Consequently, the clinician can place gauze while keeping discomfort and trauma low.
Length of the Westermark dressing forceps
At 23 cm, the forceps reach the uterine cavity through a speculum with ease. Meanwhile, the ring handles stay comfortably outside, leaving the speculum blades clear.
Packing gauze step by step
First, grip the end of the gauze strip in the jaws. Next, feed it in short loops, pushing each loop gently into place. Finally, withdraw and repeat until the packing feels firm.
Other uses
Besides packing, the same forceps swab the cervix and the vaginal vault. They also help lift out small pieces of tissue after a procedure.
On the gynaecology tray
Many trays pair a slim Westermark with a broader sponge forceps. Together, that combination covers both delicate packing and general swabbing.
Why a dedicated packing forceps
Broad sponge forceps can stretch the cervix when they enter. By contrast, the Westermark’s slim profile slips through, which is why many units keep it for intrauterine work.
