Description
Westcott Scissors
Westcott scissors are spring-action scissors for fine dissection around the eye. They come in a single 11cm size. Many eye surgeons use them for conjunctiva and Tenon’s layer.
Built for gentle dissection
The blades are slim and the spring is soft. So the surgeon can make small snips and also spread tissue gently. This mix of cutting and spreading suits layers that sit close together. In fact, this is why the pattern stays so popular. Many surgeons learn on it during training and keep it for years.
Where Westcott scissors help
Surgeons often use them to open the conjunctiva at the start of a case. They also free Tenon’s layer in strabismus and other surface work. In addition, lid and orbit surgeons may use them for fine soft tissue. Likewise, some keep a pair for trimming sutures near delicate tissue.
At a glance
Key points about this pair.
- Length: 11cm.
- Spring action for small, quick cuts.
- Fine tips for gentle spreading.
Snip and spread technique
Hold the pair like a pen. Then close the blades for a small snip. Next, slide the closed tips into the plane and open them to spread. This method separates layers with little bleeding.
Keeping the spring healthy
After each case, rinse and brush the joint and spring. Then dry them fully, since moisture can stain the spring. Also, open and close the pair a few times to check the action.
Westcott order details
Westcott pairs come non-sterile and are reusable once you clean and sterilize them. Both the spring and the blades hold three years against manufacturing defects. Westcott steel follows ASTM F899.
