Walter Gouge

With its hollow, curved blade, the Walter gouge scoops small amounts of bone from inside the nose. Septal and rhinoplasty surgeons drive it gently with a mallet.

Gouge versus chisel

A chisel has a flat edge, while a gouge curves across its width. As a result, a gouge lifts a rounded channel of bone rather than a flat slice. That shape helps when the surgeon needs to trim a ridge or groove.

Two small sizes

You can order a 3 mm or a 4.5 mm blade. Both sizes are small, so they suit precise work in tight spaces. Choose 3 mm for the finest channels, or 4.5 mm when a little more bone must go.

Typical septal tasks

For example, surgeons sometimes need to reduce a bony crest along the floor of the nose. A narrow gouge can follow that line carefully. Then forceps remove the loosened fragments.

Matching sizes to your set

Caring for your Walter gouge

Clean the inner curve of the blade carefully, since bone dust collects there. Use a small brush and plenty of rinsing. Then dry the gouge and sterilize it with a guard on the edge.
