Description
Travers Retractor
The Travers retractor is a self-retaining retractor, 21 cm long. It has 4 x 5 blunt teeth and holds a medium or deep wound open hands-free.
Blunt teeth
Blunt teeth press on tissue rather than cutting into it. So they suit areas near vessels or nerves, where a sharp point could catch. Also, many surgeons prefer blunt teeth for muscle and fat layers.
4 x 5 layout
One arm carries four teeth and the other carries five, so they sit offset. Then the teeth mesh neatly when you close the arms after use. So the spread stays even along the wound.
Mid-length reach
At 21 cm, it sits between the Weitlaner sizes and the 27 cm Martin. Therefore, it suits medium to deep wounds that a short spreader cannot reach. Plus, it fits in both orthopedic and general trays.
Compared with sharp patterns
Sharp teeth dig in harder and resist slipping. By contrast, the Travers retractor trades some bite for gentler contact. So choose it when gentle tissue handling matters more to the surgeon than raw grip.
Cleaning Travers retractor
Check each blunt tooth for chips or bends after the case. Then rinse and brush the teeth and the joint until no residue remains. Finally, dry it and lay it in a tray with room around it.
