Description
Threaded Guide Pin Instrument For Dynamic Hip Screws
The DHS threaded guide pin is a 2.5 mm pin with a threaded tip, 23 cm long. The thread grips the femoral head so the pin stays put during reaming.
Why a threaded tip
A smooth pin can back out when the reamer passes over it. By contrast, a threaded tip anchors in the bone. Therefore the path stays fixed throughout the procedure.
Size
The pin measures 2.5 mm across and 23 cm long. That length reaches from the lateral femur into the femoral head with room to spare. Moreover, the cannulated DHS instruments slide over it.
Who uses the DHS threaded guide pin
Trauma surgeons use it in hip fracture fixation. It also suits other cannulated procedures around the hip. Most DHS trays carry several pins.
Placement tips
Insert the pin with a power driver under imaging. Then confirm its depth and angle in two views. Avoid advancing it into the hip joint.
Removing the pin
After the lag screw goes in, withdraw the pin carefully. Occasionally it comes out with the reamer, so check. Then discard or reprocess according to your policy.
