Description

Spurling-Kerrison Intervertebral Disc Rongeur

The Spurling-Kerrison rongeur is a Kerrison-style bone punch for spinal decompression. Surgeons use it to nibble away the edge of the lamina and the ligamentum flavum, which opens room around the nerve roots.

How a Kerrison punch works

A Kerrison-type rongeur slides a cutting edge along the shaft toward a small footplate. So the surgeon hooks the footplate under bone, then squeezes to punch a clean bite. The design lets it cut close to the dura with good control.

Four bite widths

We offer this rongeur at 20 cm with a 2, 3, 4 or 5 mm bite. The 2 mm bite works well when foraminal space is tight. In contrast, the 5 mm bite removes bone faster where there is more room.

Its place in a decompression

After the initial exposure, larger rongeurs remove the bulk of the lamina. Then the Spurling-Kerrison rongeur refines the edges and follows the nerve root into the foramen. Many surgeons keep two or three widths open during the case.

Choosing widths

If you buy only one, a 3 or 4 mm bite covers most routine work. However, a matched set of 2 through 5 mm gives the most flexibility. Contact us if you would like a set quote.

Caring for your Spurling-Kerrison rongeur

After every use, clear bone from the footplate and cutting edge so nothing hardens there. Then brush along the sliding shaft, because debris hides where the parts meet. Rinse, dry fully and sterilize following your hospital’s cycle.

For a different profile, compare the Ferris-Smith-Kerrison rongeur. Everything else sits in the neurosurgery listings.
