Description
Simpson-Braun Obstetrical (Midwifery) Forceps
Simpson-Braun forceps pair Simpson-type blades with a 36 cm length. Clinicians use them in assisted delivery when the fetal head has molded.
The molded head
During a long labor, the fetal skull bones can overlap and elongate the head. So the head takes on a longer, narrower shape as it descends. Therefore, Simpson-type blades, with their tapered form, suit that shape well.
A 36 cm length
At 36 cm, the pattern gives reach without excess length. Also, it matches the McLane pattern in length, so both fit the same tray. Meanwhile, it fits standard obstetric trays.
Assisted vaginal delivery
The operator checks position, applies each blade and locks them. Next, traction follows the pelvic curve during a contraction. Then the team supports the perineum with a hand as the head delivers.
Simpson-Braun or McLane
Simpson-Braun forceps suit a molded head. By contrast, the solid-bladed McLane suits operators who prefer that blade. So units often keep both patterns on the delivery suite for the operator to choose.
Reprocessing Simpson-Braun forceps
Separate the blades after use and soak them briefly if blood has dried. Next, brush the inner curve of each blade and rinse in treated water. Finally, dry both blades and keep them wrapped as one set.
