Description
Schmieden-Payr Conductor
The Schmieden-Payr conductor blends two classic ligature conductor designs. It passes a thread around a vessel or duct so the surgeon can tie it securely.
Two designs in one
The tip curve follows the Payr style, while the shaft and handle follow the Schmieden style. As a result, it feels familiar to surgeons trained on either.
Length of the Schmieden-Payr conductor
At 19 cm, it is slightly shorter than the Payr. Therefore, it suits moderately deep work with fine control.
Where it helps
Ligating vessels in the abdomen and neck are typical uses. Additionally, it can carry a tape around a duct or tube.
Technique
Load the thread through the eye while the tool is still outside. Slide the curve behind the structure, pick up the thread with forceps and draw the conductor back.
Choosing between them
The Payr reaches deeper, while this blend offers more control. Many surgeons keep both, so they can match the tool to the depth.
Thread choice
Braided threads glide through the eye smoothly and grip well once tied. By contrast, stiff monofilament may need a slightly wider pass so it does not catch on tissue as it follows the tip.

Looking after the Schmieden-Payr
Soak the tip briefly, then work a nylon bristle through the eye. Dry the whole shaft before sterilising.
Delivery details
Combining two patterns, the Schmieden-Payr still keeps three years against manufacturing defects. Each conductor gets a detailed inspection at our Atlanta office before dispatch. For a primer on surgical alloys, consult ASTM F899. To round out the tray, look at our Payr conductor. Related options wait in the general instruments catalog. Our common questions page handles payment and delivery. We will happily answer questions by email. A backup conductor in stores helps on busy days.
