Description
Millard Retractor
The Millard retractor lifts lip and nose tissue during cleft and facial surgery. Its small hooks catch the edge precisely, which matters on very small fields.
One hook or two
The single hook pattern holds one precise point. By contrast, the double hook spreads the hold across two points. As a result, it keeps a flap from twisting.
Working end of the Millard retractor
The working end measures 18 mm. That suits the lip, nostril and columella. In addition, the slim handle keeps the view open.
Where it comes from
D. Ralph Millard designed tools for cleft lip repair. Today the retractor still appears on cleft and paediatric plastic trays. It also helps in adult nasal work.
Typical tasks
It lifts the nostril rim during nasal floor repair. For example, it also holds a lip flap while the surgeon aligns the muscle. Finally, it supports the edge during closure.
Handling
Place the hook just under the skin edge. Next, lift with fingertip pressure only. Also, reposition rather than stretching the tissue further.

Hook care
Rinse the hooks straight after use. Brush gently with a soft brush. Then dry and store them with the points protected.
