The large pin cutter shears heavy Steinmann and fixation pins. Three versions are rated for 5.0, 6.0 and 7.5 mm pins.

Heavy-duty cutting

Thick pins need serious leverage to cut. Therefore these cutters have long handles and stout jaws. Also, the bigger the pin, the longer the cutter.

Three ratings

Choose the 5.0, 6.0 or 7.5 mm version. Match the rating to the largest pin you use. Cutting above the rating can damage the jaws.

Who uses a large pin cutter

External fixation teams trim Schanz screws and pins. Also, trauma surgeons cut large Steinmann pins. In addition, orthopedic wards keep one for frame adjustments.

Safe technique

Shield the free end of the pin before cutting. Then close the handles smoothly. Keep fingers clear of the jaws.

Space to work

Long handles need room to open. Consequently, plan the cut where the handles can swing freely. Additionally, an assistant can steady the frame.

External fixation frames use pins of several diameters. Consequently, one large cutter rated at 7.5 mm covers most of them. Smaller units may prefer the 5.0 or 6.0 mm versions.
