Description
Operating Scissors
Operating scissors are the everyday cutting instrument on a general tray. This pattern comes in eight lengths, two blade shapes and three tip styles.
Three tip styles
Sharp/sharp tips start a cut in tight tissue. Meanwhile, sharp/blunt tips pair a point with a guarded blade, and blunt/blunt tips cut dressings and sutures without piercing the skin.
Eight lengths
The 10.5 to 13 cm sizes suit dressings and small procedures. By contrast, the 15.5 to 20 cm sizes reach deeper fields and cut heavier material.
Tungsten carbide option
The 14.5, 16.5 and 18.5 cm sizes also come with tungsten carbide blade inserts. These inserts hold an edge for longer than plain steel.
Choosing a combination
Many clinics stock a straight sharp/blunt pair for sutures and a curved pair for tissue. Then they add blunt/blunt scissors for dressings, since the rounded tips protect the patient. Also, a longer pair helps when the wound sits deep. As a result, three or four pairs cover most general work without duplicating. If you are unsure which pair to order, start with a 14.5 cm straight sharp/blunt pair. It handles most routine cutting.
Cleaning operating scissors
Rinse the blades straight after use so blood does not dry in the joint. Next, open the scissors and brush along the cutting edges. Then dry them fully and store them closed with the tips protected.
