Description
Olivecrona Brain Spatula
The Olivecrona brain spatula gently holds brain tissue aside during surgery. Its two ends give two widths on one instrument, so the surgeon can switch quickly.
Gentle retraction
Brain tissue needs light, even pressure. Therefore surgeons use a smooth spatula rather than a toothed retractor. The spatula spreads the force over a wider area.
End sizes and curvature
We list the spatula at 18 cm with four end pairs: 7/9, 11/13, 15/18 and 18/22 mm. Each pair comes in a concave or convex form. So you can choose from eight options in total.
Use during a procedure
The surgeon or assistant places the spatula under a lobe or along a cortical surface. Then it holds the tissue while the surgeon works below. Surgeons also mount spatulas on self-retaining systems in longer cases.
Picking ends and form
Narrow ends such as 7/9 mm suit small corridors. Meanwhile, the 18/22 mm pair covers a broader surface. Concave or convex choice depends on the surface you retract, so ask us if you are unsure.
Caring for your Olivecrona brain spatula
Wipe the spatula clean as soon as the case ends. Next, wash both ends with a soft sponge and neutral detergent. Rinse, dry thoroughly, and sterilize without bending the ends.

How to order
Each spatula carries a three-year warranty for workmanship defects. We hand-inspect it in Atlanta, and then it goes out. Our FAQ covers orders, delivery and billing. For its steel, we point to ASTM F899, which covers surgical instrument alloys. For straight and curved spatulas in more widths, see the Heifetz brain spatula. Also look through our neurosurgery products.
For professional use. Wondering about image accuracy or nickel content? The care and sterilization page answers both, and the delivery information gives shipping times.
