Description
Naegele Perforator
The Naegele perforator is a 25 cm historical instrument of the Naegele pattern. Obstetricians once used it in craniotomy after fetal death.
Background
Obstructed labor once carried grave danger when the fetus had already died. So clinicians turned to craniotomy to allow a vaginal delivery. However, cesarean section and modern care have ended that practice in routine obstetrics.
Current role
This instrument now suits teaching programs and historical collections. Also, obstetric societies sometimes display such pieces at events. Then the instrument helps tell the longer story of how childbirth became safer.
Naegele pattern
Several perforator patterns existed, each carrying the name of its designer. Therefore, this one bears the Naegele name. Meanwhile, a teaching collection may pair it with the Smellie pattern so students can compare the two.
Size and storage
The Naegele perforator measures 25 cm. So it fits most standard instrument cases, display cabinets and drawers. In addition, a padded slot keeps the tip from contact with other items.
Care of Naegele perforator
Wash it by hand with lukewarm water and a gentle detergent. Next, dry the instrument at once with a clean, lint-free towel so no water marks form. Then keep the tip sheathed and store the piece in a dry, closed cabinet.
