Description
Male Metal Catheter
A rigid reusable catheter, 29 cm long, with the curve at the tip that the male urethra requires. Metal catheters remain in use where a soft catheter will not pass, where rigidity is needed to negotiate a stricture, and in settings where a reusable instrument is preferred to a disposable one.
Sizing
Sized on the Charriere scale, also written French, from 8 through to 20. Each listing supplies one catheter in the size chosen. The scale is a measure of outside circumference, so a Charriere 12 is 4 mm across, and moving up one size adds a third of a millimeter to the diameter.
Tip and handle
The tip is curved and closed, with drainage eyes set back from the end. The ring handle gives a positive hold on a wet instrument and indicates the plane of the curve, which matters when the catheter is being advanced and the tip cannot be seen.
Care
Brush the lumen with a soft channel brush from the handle end, and flush until the return runs clear. Check the eyes for a rolled edge and the tip for any burr, since either will be felt by the patient before it is seen by the user. Dry with the catheter tipped so the lumen drains, and store where the curve is not loaded.
