The Larkin footplate hand instrument is a small perforator for stapes surgery. Otologists use it to make a precise opening in the stapes footplate for a prosthesis.

Why perforate by hand

A hand perforator lets the surgeon feel the thin footplate as the tip passes through. Therefore, they can control depth and avoid sudden movement. Many surgeons value that tactile feedback.

Tip size

We list this instrument with a 0.8 mm tip. That size creates a small opening suited to many piston prostheses. However, always check the diameter your prosthesis needs before surgery. Also, if you want a different tip size, ask us, because we can often source related patterns.

In stapedotomy

Stapedotomy replaces the stapes function with a piston through a small hole. First, the surgeon removes the stapes arch. Next, the footplate is opened with a perforator, drill or laser. Then the piston goes in.

Choosing perforators

Some surgeons use a single perforator. Others, however, start small and enlarge the opening with a second tool. Our footplate drills and picks can complete such a set. Then the whole stapes tray stays consistent in feel.

Clean the tip under magnification if you can. Then rinse, dry and protect it with a tip cover. Sterilize it in a dedicated micro instrument tray.
